Buddhist diet plan: what is it? and guidelines

Inspired by the spiritual practices of the Buddha, Buddhist diet is a new-old way of eating. It has been designed for both the body and the mind and includes detox diets rich in vegetables and fruits but not wholly vegetarian. It rather provides variety. What could be more zen than this system and ideology. Certainly neither the very low calorie diet recipes neither the Safflower oil diet.

Buddhist philosophy prohibits the use of drugs and alcohol and prefers vegetables over meat, fruits over sugary foods and chewing thoroughly overeating more. This surely is very different from the ideologies and principles followed by fat loss diet and Candida diet food lists.

They believe that Buddha allowed eating meat in moderate quantities of only the specified animals. Ten specific kinds of animal meat that were considered inappropriate for consumption were horse, dog, snake, elephant, tiger, bear and leopard.  Because they had strong belief that animals were not only killed for the purpose of consuming their meat. They have the right food choices.

Some pungent herbs that were considered to be inappropriate for consumption include garlic, onions, spring onions, chives, and leeks.

Buddhist diet recipes

Bamboo Shoot, Mushroom, and Long Bean Stir-Fry

Makes: 6 Servings

  • Two tbs. Sesame oil
  • Two thinly sliced dried chilies or dried cayenne
  • 1/2 lb. king oyster mushrooms
  • 2 Julian cut medium carrots
  • 1/3 lb. chopped long beans
  • 1/2 lb. cooked bamboo shoots
  • 2 tbsp. low-sodium soy sauce


  • Pour in the oil in a wok and heat it over medium-high heat.
  • Add chilies and cook for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Add mushrooms and cook for 7-9 minutes until the moisture evaporates.
  • Add in the carrots and saute for 2 minutes.
  • Add long beans, and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the bamboo shoots, and fry with continuous stirring for 3 minutes.
  • Add soy sauce and allow it to cook for about 1 minute.

Sweet Walnut Soup

Makes 8 Servings


  • 2 cups raw walnuts
  • 3 tbsp. rice
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt to taste
  • 1 15-oz. can coconut milk

Directions: –

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Take a baking sheet and spread walnuts on it, and allow it to toast for 15 minutes and then cool.
  • In 1 cup of boiling water, soak rice in for 2 hours. Drain the rice.
  • Add the rice, walnuts and 4 cups of water in a blender to make the puree.
  • Pour in the puree into the saucepan, add sugar and salt, and allow it to simmer.
  • Reduce heat to low, and allow it to cook for 15 minutes.
  • Using a sieve, strain the mixture into the bowl.
  • Discard the material left on the top of the sieve. Add the coconut milk and mix it well.

Sticky Rice with Carrots, Shiitake Mushrooms, and Peanuts

Makes: 6 Servings


  • 2 cups rice
  • 1 oz. dried shiitake mushrooms
  • 1 tbsp. sesame oil
  • Three peeled and grated carrots
  • 1/4 cup roasted peanuts
  • One tsp. finely chopped fresh ginger
  • 3 tbsp. sweet soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp. soy sauce
  • One tsp. sugar
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil


  • Take a bowl of water and soak the rice overnight.
  • Take a heatproof bowl and place mushrooms in it. Cover the mushrooms with 1 cup of boiling water. Soak for 1 hour. Drain them and finely chop them.
  • In a non-stick skillet, heat sesame oil over medium heat. Add carrots for 5 minutes. Add ginger and peanuts and cook for one more minute.
  • Combine the stir-fried sauce, sugar, soy sauce and 1 tbsp. of water in a bowl. Stir in the carrot mixture then turn off the flame. Set aside.
  • Drain rice and transfer them to a dish that can fit in the steamer. Add ¼ cup of water. Steam the rice in the steamer for about 25-30 minutes until soft but grains remain separated. Transfer rice to another bowl and add the vegetable oil and carrot mixture, using a spoon to mix all the ingredients.
  • Serve warm on a platter.

Yuba Rolls


  • Three tsp. sesame oil
  • 3 Julian cut carrots (2 cups)
  • Six sliced mushrooms (11/2 cups)
  • 2 cups thin green beans
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp. maple syrup
  • One 8-oz. Package. frozen yuba sheets
  • 1 tbsp. corn-starch
  • 1 tbsp. canola oil


  • Take a skillet, add two tbs. Sesame oil and heat it over medium heat. Add mushrooms and carrots to cook for 7-9 minutes. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  • Take a pan and add remaining one teaspoon. Sesame oil to the pan to cook green beans in oil for 3 minutes. Transfer to separate bowl.
  • Mix maple syrup, soy sauce and ¼ cup water in a bowl.
  • Fill the sink with water over which place yuba sheets. Place one yuba sheet on a clean kitchen towel, blow dry it with a paper towel, then apply the soy sauce mixture. From the bottom of yuba sheet, place the green beans in a row. Pour in 2 tbsp. of carrot mixture in the line above the green beans. Roll the bottom up. Set aside.
  • Repeat the same procedure by placing the second Yuba sheet.
  • Mix corn-starch into 1 tbsp. Water in a bowl for making a paste. Apply this paste to the outside edge of the large yuba rolls to seal. Repeat the same procedure to make the second yuba roll.
  • In a large skillet, heat canola oil over medium heat. Add yuba rolls to cook for 10 minutes, until golden brown by continually flipping the rolls. Add 1/2 cup hot water and cover the skillet reducing heat to medium-low.steam for 5 minutes, then change the side of the rolls. Add ½ cup of more water and allow it to steam for 5-7 minutes until the liquid evaporates completely. Turn off the flame and allow it to cool. Cut crosswise into thin slices and serve with the renaming mixture of soy sauce. Serve immediately or chilled.

Buddhist Vegetarian Stew (Lo Han Jai)


  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil or vegetable oil
  • eight fresh mushrooms (stems removed and cap sliced.)
  • eight fresh peeled and quartered Chinese water chestnuts
  • 1 carrot (peel and cut into julienne strips)
  • 2 cups cabbage chopped
  • 1 cup vegetarian broth
  • 1 cup tofu
  • eight snow peas
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium is most preferably used)
  • 1 tablespoon corn-starch to make a paste with two tsp. water
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Chinese parsley (cilantro) for garnish


  • Take a wok and heat it until smoky.
  • Add olive or vegetable oil.
  • Stir-fry water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, carrots and cabbage and cook for 5 minutes over medium heat.
  • Add broth.
  • Cover it with a lid and allow it to cook for 5 minutes over low heat.
  • Add tofu skin, tofu, snow peas, bean sprouts and soy sauce.
  • Cover and allow it to simmer for 2 minutes.
  • Add corn starch to make gravy.
  • Drizzle some sesame oil and top with chopped sprigs of Chinese parsley.

Makes 8 servings

  • 12 large chopped black mushrooms
  • 5 cups boiling-hot water
  • ½ cup dried beans
  • 1/2 lb fresh bamboo shoots
  • 2 to 3 oz bean thread noodles
  • 1 (1/2-lb) firm fresh tofu cake
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable or peanut oil
  • 1 piece fresh peeled and thinly sliced ginger and garlic
  • 1/2 cup peeled shelled ginkgo nuts
  • 1/3 cup vegetarian oyster sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup Chinese rice wine
  • 3/4 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cups fresh soybean sprouts
  • 2 romaine hearts, trimmed and quartered lengthwise, then cut into 2-inch pieces


  • Take a bowl and soak mushrooms in 5 cups of boiling-hot water in a bowl using a plate to keep them submerged and turned mushrooms over occasionally until cool and softened enough to handle for about 30 minutes.
  • Squeeze the caps to extract out the excess liquid and reserve this liquid.
  • Cut and discard the stems from mushrooms. Cut the caps into wedges.
  • Meanwhile, break the bean curd skin carefully into two halves. Transfer to a bowl then adds boil water to cover and soak until softened for 30 minutes.
  • Trim the shoots of the bamboo, if using fresh bamboos then equally cut it into two halves. Pull off the leaves and remove any inedible part with a sharp knife.
  • Cover fresh bamboo with cold water in a saucepan and bring it to a boil for 2 minutes.
  • Drain them and rinse with cold water.
  • Repeat the same procedure and then cut the bamboo into halves with a sharp knife.
  • Add noodles in cold water and allow them to soak for about 5 minutes. Drain out the liquid and transfer them to a bowl.
  • Also, drain the bean curd skins in a colander. Dry by squeezing out the excess liquid and cut crosswise into pieces.
  • Equally half the tofu into thin slices. Tofu is a great alternative to meat in the bodybuilding diet plan.
  • Take a heavy pot and add oil to it. Heat it over moderate heat until it starts to simmer. Add garlic and ginger and stir it to cook for 30 seconds.
  • Add the mushrooms, bamboo, bean curd skins, and ginkgo nuts and cook by constantly stirring for 2 minutes.
  • Add the oyster sauce, rice wine, soy sauce and sugar and allow it to simmer for 1 minute.
  • Add mushroom-soaking liquid that was kept reserved and boil it. Gradually add in the tofu and soybean then reduce the heat to allow it to simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Add romaine hearts and then allow it to simmer, covered with a lid until the romaine turns tender for about 5 minutes.

Buddhist vegetarian diet

Buddhists believe that life is to be sacred; therefore, killing animals for meat is unjust. Consequently, they choose vegetables for consumption as they consider them healthy. Vegetarian have thoughts of causing pain and suffering on eating the meat of animals and should, therefore, be avoided. They consider vegan diet to be healthier as certain animals’ meat can cause cancer.  What can be more revealing than the revelations of monks, especially Tibetians.

Vegetarianism has many health benefits as it helps you in losing weight and also provides you with a variety of nutrients that are essential for the physiological functioning of your body.  Fruits being rich in antioxidants can help in warding off the process of aging. Vegetables, grains, and fruits are rich in fibers and are involved in fighting against cancer and promoting healthy digestion. Also, the vegetables and fruits are cheaper to produce and can easily be digested. When you follow a vegetarian diet, it is different than the 1800 calorie diet recipes. You need to keep focusing on the essence of the system to reach weight loss.
