What is a fad diet?

The terms “food faddism” and “fad diet” refer to the eating habits or diets that enjoy or have enjoyed a significant, but temporary, media and popular success. The term “fad food” can also mean food that has enjoyed a resounding, but temporary, success in people’s preferences.

It can be easily defined that a popular diet would be a diet followed by celebrities or VIPs.

All those who use the term “fad diet” to indicate a diet imply some universal (slightly cynical) characteristics, which we can summarize in the following points:

  • The promise of fast and striking results;
  • Offer impossible promises, which seem to be too good to be true;
  • Guidelines are extrapolated by individual studies or experiences of different subjects;
  • The promotion of revolutionary principles that contradict the opinions of official science;
  • The lists of good and bad foods where the food to be avoided are sometimes entire categories of food;
  • They necessitate purchase of commercial products;
  • Based on published studies, but still awaiting confirmation from other researchers.

List of fad diets examples

The overwhelming majority of the proposed diets are fad diets, and this certainly does not give honor the professionalism of the sector. There are many diets that work that one does not know about due to the lack of the proper marketing strategy.

It must be said that not everyone agrees in classifying diets as “fad diet” or not. For example, some consider the zone diet a fad diet, due to the inconsistency of the scientific basis proposed by its creator Barry Sears. Others believe in ignoring the experimental error; to lose weight you can focus on a specific area like the belly or the hips, or you can focus on a general weight loss. Here is a list of the most typical fad diets:

  • A diet which includes only one food to eat like a sandwich, pasta, grapefruit, and fruits among many others.
  • hyper-protein diets: Atkins, Scarsdale, low carb, tisanoreica, and Dukan.
  • The dissociated diets;
  • Diets based on supplements and substitutive meals: Herbalife, protiplus, etc.

The diet of rice, sandwich, pasta diets are regularly spread out in the media and magazines at the beginning of summer, where everyone wants to be shredded.

Everyone knows that, to keep fit with a proper diet, you have to eat everything in moderation. Mono-food diets are very popular and particularly requested. It is interesting to understand the psychological mechanism underlying a wrong but conscious choice. Why do people hurt themselves knowing what they are doing?

The best known mono-food diet is that of vegetable-mix, born with a specific therapeutic purpose and then abused by those who want to lose weight without difficulty. The lever that pushes towards the mono-food diet is precisely the absence of willpower of the subject, who wants a simple, immediate approach that leads to some results in the shortest possible time.

Nothing seems easier than a diet that involves the intake of only one food.   • Pasta diet

Pasta-based diets are a kind of food scam. Since pasta is a high-calorie food, unbalanced in favor of carbohydrates and little satiating, it must be integrated with a lot of other foods, so basically the proposed diet becomes a normal low-calorie diet where there is pasta once a day, or twice in the more “daring” cases but with all the ifs and buts of the case (for example, a vegetable soup with a little bit of pasta: would you call it pasta?) It is often advised not to follow it for more than seven days.   • Rice diet

The same applies as to the pasta diet, only that rice is more satisfying and is considered less palatable, so it is easier to manage during a diet. Also, rice is used to produce many complementary foods: ice cream, biscuits, not to mention all types of rice on the market (brown rice, wild, Thai, basmati, etc.), which can be added to the diet making it more monothematic. In short, the diet of rice is more acceptable than that of pasta, but the basic reaction is the same: it is a diet to be done for a short time, a couple of weeks at most, then we return to the previous diet (and weight).

  • Sandwich diet

The diet for career women: “work forces you to have lunch at the bar? With the sandwich diet you will have an enviable silhouette anyway.” Too bad that at breakfast there are always the same two pieces of toast and in the evening the usual chicken breast with half a salad. But for lunch, you can enjoy your legendary sandwich, but beware no fatty sauces and no oils on the sandwiches. And plenty of vegetables as a side dish. Problems:

This diet, in addition to being calorie-free, is deficient in all essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fiber and yes, even fat.

Another problem is that a diet so inadequate in nutrients will lead us to eat anything that happens to be in front of us. And, we will gain twice the weight that we lost.

Dangers of fad diets?

Some of the myths regarding typical fashion diets that have been popular all over the world include:

  • Fashion diets do not help one to lose weight and keep it off for a long-term period.
  • Fashion diets are not the best way to lose weight. These diets often promise rapid weight loss, especially if they are strictly hypocaloric. These diets can help you to lose weight initially. However, these diets are difficult to stick to, and most do not lead to long-term weight loss.
  • It’s a myth that skipping a meal can help you lose weight. Skipping meals can only make the individual more hungry and primed to overeat at the next meal. People who skip breakfast tend to be heavier than people eating a healthy breakfast.
  • Fashion diets may be unhealthy: these diets often do not provide all the essential nutrients. A rapid weight loss of over 3 pounds a week, after the first few weeks, increases the risk of complications such as gallstones and ketosis. Remember that carbohydrates are the primary source of energy and the fuel of our organism.
  • A low-calorie diet rich in protein could be particularly harmful. You have to know that there are two types of carbohydrates: simple sugars and complex ones. Foods that are high in complex carbohydrates like whole grains, vegetables are recommended.

  • Fashion diets including “Low Fat” or “fat-free” foods. It is not true that all the fad diets that recommend low-fat or fat-free foods can be low in calories. These foods may contain added flour, salt, starch, or sugar to enhance the flavor and make it tastier.
