Does Zoloft Medication cause losing weight or gain weight?

What is Zoloft?

Zoloft is a medication that is based on Sertraline. These pills are usually prescribed to treat many psychological and psychiatric disorders. Some of these are depression, panic attacks, OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorders), anxiety, post-traumatic stress and social phobias. Some women might take it to treat and manage their PMS (premenstrual syndrome); but it is a solution only to those who have it severely.

This medicine works by restoring the balance of the brain and restoring the average levels of serotonin. Its benefits are numerous and include:

  • Better mood as you begin to enjoy your daily activities much more. As a result, you will feel alive more than ever.
  • You start enjoying a good night’s sleep
  • It restores your energy levels
  • It helps getting rid of everything that is preventing you from having a good positive day such as stress and anxieties.  You will no longer have negative, restricting thoughts.
  • You will no longer have to worry about having panic attacks.
  • It starts improving and decreasing your urges for doing specific tasks. This applies to those who have the OCD.

How is Zoloft used?

Sertraline pills always come with a medication guide that explains everything. Before using these tablets, you are advised to understand all there is to know about the possible side effects of this chemical as well as all the precautions you need to take.

Zoloft pills are taken orally.  Usually, these pills are given once a day: either in the morning or the evening.  You are not required to eat before having the medicine as a tablet. On the other hand, if you want to take the Zoloft capsules, you are required to have it after breakfast or after a meal.

For women who are taking Zoloft to treat their PMS, you might be prescribed the pills to be taken daily or only during the two weeks before having your period.

When your doctor starts you on Zoloft, he will most probably put you on a low dose and according to your condition and your response to the treatment, he will either keep you at this small dose or end up increasing it gradually. So, you may start with a 25 mg dosage at the beginning and keep taking these same pills, or end up going up to 50 mg dosage or even 100 mg dosage.

Once you start these pills, and even if you end up feeling better, you should keep taking them as directed by your doctor. In case you feel the need to discontinue Zoloft, you have to consult your doctor. This brain regulator should not be stopped suddenly. If your body got used to the drug, and you deprived yourself of it, your condition might come back, and in the worst way. Also, you might experience mood swings, tiredness, headaches, and it could get as bad as feeling similar to having an electric shock for a short period.

Zoloft Interaction

Just like any medication, when having more than one kind, you may end up mixing the chemical ingredients up. This mixing could mess up your system, leading to complications. Make sure you understand all the interactions between this medication and other types of medicines. Always consult with your doctor before changing any dosage or adding any other pill. When on Zoloft, you are not advised to take the following:

  • Pimozide or other drugs that could lead to bleeding like Ibuprofen, warfarin, and others
  • MAO inhibitors. These, when mixed up with Zoloft, could lead to severe side effects including death. You are required to stop any MAO inhibitor at least two weeks before and after starting the Zoloft treatment.
  • Other serotonin medicines. You are not allowed to take more than one serotonin-increasing pill. It might lead to toxicity. These include antidepressants or street drugs like ecstasy.
  • Try not to mix the treatment with drinking alcohol as it might lead to drowsiness.
  • Antihistamines.
  • Muscle relaxants and narcotic pain relievers like codeine.
  • Drugs for sleeping or to addressing anxiety, like zolpidem.
  • Aspirin. This latter increases the risk of bleeding when taking with Zoloft. You will have to check with your doctor in case you are required to take aspirin tablets for your heart.

Zoloft cause weight gain

We live in such a demanding world where people are feeling stressed and anxious most of their time. While many engage in activities to dissipate their negative thoughts and feelings, like social interactions, meditation, yoga, and even participating in physical activities, others resort to taking anti-depressants. For those who pick medications as their strategy, they will end up feeling happier and more comfortable; however, just like everything in our lives, it might come with a price.

Many experts agree that Zoloft, just like any anti-depressant, causes weight gain. This surplus of pounds could go as far as ten pounds or even more. The Cleveland Clinic announced that antidepressants are more likely to cause weight gain when used over an extended period. They set six months as the cut line. Even if you end up gaining weight, you can check how many celebrities have been shaking off this extra weight like Aretha Franklin weight loss.

Experts say that about 25% of those on antidepressants will end up gaining weight. Some might add ten pounds while others could go up to 100 pounds. These drugs do make you gain weight; but it depends on every person and on the type of medicine you are taking. According to the Mayo Clinic, some antidepressants might lead to weight gain, while others could lead to weight loss. Wellbutrin, for example, makes you lose weight. On the other hand, Zoloft and Prozac will most likely add extra pounds to your body. That was the case of singer Demi Lovato who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and anxiety issues. Many celebrities suffer from anxiety and mental issues, but not all of them are open about these problems. You can always check the Demi Lovato weight loss and how she managed to stay fit when on antidepressants.

The exact mechanism by which antidepressants lead to weight gain is not very clear; however, many theories speculate that the reason might be increased appetite and a binge eating for carbs. Others believe that such pills affect the metabolic rate. Finally, it might be that when you are depressed, you tend to eat less food; but, when you start feeling happier, you will gain your appetite back. This will result in the bigger caloric intake.

The world consumption of antidepressants is shocking. In 2005, more than 27 million Americans, who are six years and older, were on these drugs. If you were among those who are gaining weight to feel happier and better; you might want to try the yogi detox tea that helps cleanse the body of toxins.

You might also want to check the gluten-free diet, especially if you discover that you have a wheat allergy. This is the case of people having celiac disease. Some people are even retaining a lot of water when on antidepressants. This could lead to a more bulged body and face. If this is your case, you can check how to lose face weight.
